What do I need to know about taking the ferry to the Isle of Wight?

To get to the Isle of Wight by car, you’ll need to take a ferry, as no bridges or tunnels connect the island to the mainland. Here’s a step-by-step guide: 

Drive to a Ferry Port 

You’ll need to reach one of the ferry terminals on the south coast of England. The main options are: 

Portsmouth 

  1. Ferry Route: Portsmouth to Fishbourne. 
  2. Operator: Wightlink
  3. Duration: About 45 minutes. 

Southampton 

  1. Ferry Route: Southampton to East Cowes. 
  2. Operator: Red Funnel
  3. Duration: About 55 minutes. 

Lymington 

  1. Ferry Route: Lymington to Yarmouth.

Book Your Ferry in Advance 

  1. Car ferry services are popular, especially during holidays and weekends. You should book your ticket in advance to secure a spot. Each operator allows online booking, and you must provide your vehicle's details (e.g., size, registration). 

Arrive at the Port 

  1. Arrive at the ferry terminal 30-60 minutes before your departure time. 
  2. Follow the signs to the vehicle check-in lanes, where staff will guide you onto the ferry. 

On the Ferry 

  1. Once your car is parked on the ferry deck, you’ll usually need to leave and go to the passenger areas.

From London to Portsmouth 

  1. Drive approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to Portsmouth. 
  2. Use the Wightlink Car Ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. 

From London to Southampton 

  1. Drive about 2 hours to Southampton. 
  2. Use the Red Funnel Car Ferry to East Cowes. 

From London to Lymington
